Kathy:Oh, look. There’s a talent show on next Friday evening. Let’s enter for it.

Susan:But I can’t enter for a talent show. I don’t think I have any talent.

Kathy:Come on. You can sing really well.

Susan:Oh, thanks. But you can, too.

Kathy:Well, no. I can’t sing at all—I shout! But I can play the piano.

Susan:So maybe we can enter for the show.

Kathy:Sure. Why not?

Susan:OK. Let’s start to practice tomorrow.

Jack:Oh, hi, Joan. I’m Jack Sun. You live upstairs, right?

Joan:That’s right, in the apartment right above yours….Oh, something smells delicious. Are you cooking?

Jack:Well, it depends on what you call cooking…very basic. Uh, would you like to come in?

Joan:No, thanks. I don’t want to disturb you. I was just wondering if you knew Carol’s new phone number. I can’t seem to find it.

Part VI:快速阅读

Flattering(奉承) Remarks(话)

Jack was young, rich, and fond of(喜欢) girls. He hardly ever did any work and spent most of his time enjoying himself.

One summer he bought a big motor-boat(机动船). As soon as it was ready to go to sea, he telephoned one of the girls he had met somewhere and invited her for a trip in his new motor-boat.

The way Jack used to invite a girl for the trip in his boat was like this: he would begin by saying, "Hello, Laura (or whatever the girl's name was), I have just bought a beautiful new motor-boat and I would like to take you out for a trip in it."

The girl's answer was usually cautious(谨慎的,小心的) because everybody in that part of the country knew Jack's reputation(声名) with girls. She would ay something like this. "Oh, really? That's nice. What name have you given to the boat?" Jack would then answer, "Well, Laura, I have named it after you."

Of course, the girl would feel very proud that Jack had chosen her name for the boat out of the names of all his many girl-friends and she would think that Jack must really love her. She would, therefore, be quite willing to accept his invitation to go for such a trip in his motor-boat.

It would not be until she got down to the harbour(港口) and actually saw the boat that she would understand how cleverly(聪明地) Jack had tricked(耍弄) her because there in neat(整齐的) gold letters on the boat, she would see its name “After you”.
