你要尽量把你所提到的事实与洋教授所熟悉、所看重的东西联系起来讲，因为很多洋教授对中国相当无知。在国外，我曾不止一次被问过Beijing University和Peking University是不是在同一个城市，可见一斑。我当年高考襄阳地区第一名，要说给洋人听他们会一脸漠然，所以我说：I achieved the highest total of scores in area with a population the size of Ontario‘s。一个中央电视台的记者要去美国，我帮她写道：I am regularly watched in China by an audience that numbers more than the American population。1998年克林顿来华访问，所以在文章中提到北大时这么写：Beijing University， dubbed as China’s Harvard by President Clinton on his recent trip to the country. 同理，当你提到863工程、联想集团等中国名词时，最好也给一个美国人能够理解的解释。
最好举出具体的实际事例来证明你用的那些形容词所言非虚，一个好的例子可以顶很多个华丽的词藻。中国留学申请者在写作留学申请文件时，要么是大量堆砌形容词，但没有可佐证的事例，要么是讲一大串事例，但不知这些事例反映什么问题。尤以第一种错误为多，特别是在帮老师草拟给自己的推荐信时。试想，空中楼阁如何立得住？弄不好，洋教授会认为你弄虚作假，你的工夫可就白费了。
当然还有很多别的写作技巧。同时，象任何其它方面的写作一样，你也需要应用那些最一般的写作基本功。但是，如果你把这里说的几点儿做到了，你就不会错得太远。
